7th Grader Suspended and Given Psychological Evaluation for Twirling a Pencil

A New Jersey 7th grader was subjected to a five-hour physical and psychological examination for twirling a pencil in class.

Here’s how it went down:

Ethan Chaplin was twirling a pencil with a pen cap on it when a fellow student yelled, “He’s making gun motions – send him to juvie!”

The student who made the accusation had bullied Ethan earlier in the day and was trying to get him in trouble, Ethan says. He said the school administrators wouldn’t hear his side of the story.

Ethan was suspended and told he could not return to school until a complete physical and psychological examination was conducted.

News 12 New Jersey contacted Vernon Schools Superintendent Charles Maranzano, and here’s what he had to say about the incident:

Maranzano says school policy and the law requires him to investigate when anyone in a school feels uncomfortable or threatened by another student. 

“We never know what’s percolating in the minds of children,” says Maranzano. “And when they demonstrate behaviors that raise red flags, we must do our duty.”

Red flags? Yes, because pencils are so darn terrifying. Surely, twirling a pencil in class is a sign that a student is about to commit some atrocity against humanity.

Michael Chaplin, Ethan’s father, spoke to News 12 about the incident:

I’m absolutely livid. I think it’s gross misconduct at its finest. They took something so minimal and took it so far over the edge.

Chaplin told Infowars about the ordeal his son was put through during the examination:

The child was stripped, had to give blood samples (which caused him to pass out) and urine samples for of all things drug testing. Then four hours later a social worker spoke to him for five minutes and cleared him. Then an actual doctor came in and said the state was 100 percent incorrect in their procedure and this would not get him back in school.

Ethan joins the ranks of other school-aged children who have been suspended over what most with common sense would deem “normal” childhood behavior. Last year, a second grader in Virginia was suspended for holding a pencil like a gun. Two elementary school students, ages five and ten (in different states) were recently suspended over “finger guns”. And, last year a five-year-old in Massachusetts was suspended for making an oh-so-scary gun out of LEGOS at school.

Zero tolerance = zero common sense.
