Amazing discovery! Ancient bugles melted from ice

Once the ice melted from my grandparents ice box, I found an original package of Bugles Corn Chips.  It was decades old.  For nostalgia’s sake, I opened the bag to see if they were still good.  To my surprise, the snack tasted like corn!  I mean, real corn!  And, it was as if it had been packaged fresh the day before.  Amazing. 

I decided to investigate the taste equivalent with a bag of Original Bugles manufactured today.  I also asked an organic farming enthusiast if she had heirloom corn.  She did and gave me a few of them still in their husks.  I conducted my taste test and sure enough, the organic corn tasted just like the bag of chips from the vintage freezer.  The can of corn I pulled from the cup board tasted like the newly purchased bag of chips. 

In 1965, General Mills put “Bugles” chips on the grocery store shelves.  Back then, corn had not yet been genetically altered from its original organism DNA makeup.  The product actually tasted like heirloom corn.  Today, the idea that “Original Bugles” is original is by far the truth.  It’s tasteless until salt, MSG, and other excitotoxins – chemicals – are added.

Originally, Bugles were developed under healthy conditions and fried in non hydrogenated coconut oil.  This was non toxic compared to hydrogenated soybean oil.  Today, the saturated coconut oil “Original Bugles” are fried in saturated coconut fat and the main ingredient, corn, isn’t corn at all.  It’s a bastardized synthetic analogue of the original plant.
