Colombian Authorities Confiscate 7 Tons of Cocaine Heading for Netherlands
Colombia’s National Police confiscated seven tons of cocaine bound for the Netherlands at the Caribbean port of Cartagena, in what officials described as the third-biggest seizure of that drug in the past 13 years.
Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon, in remarks Wednesday to reporters, described the blow against drug-trafficking gangs as an “historic seizure” and attributed it to “exceptional” intelligence work.
The drugs were bound for the Dutch port of Rotterdam and were hidden inside a container supposedly filled with pineapple pulp, according to the initial investigation.
No arrests were announced and authorities are trying to determine the owners of the huge shipment.
The drugs were seized Tuesday but authorities waited until after they were weighed to make the announcement.
Authorities confiscated two tons of cocaine two weeks ago at the Caribbean port of Santa Marta, while police made another two-ton seizure of that same drug a few days ago in Buenaventura, Colombia’s main Pacific port.
Police seized 10.5 tons of cocaine in 2008 at the Caribbean port of Barranquilla, located between the cities of Cartagena and Santa Marta.
