Iranian Authorities Seize Picasso Painting Found in Small Town Near Azerbaijan
Police in a little town in northeastern Iran confiscated a painting that local experts say was created by Pablo Picasso, Iran’s Mehr news agency reported Monday.
The work, which measures 33.25 centimeters (13.09 inches) high and is in the Cubist style, was seized in a village in the Ultan region, near the border with Azerbaijan, as the people in possession of it were attempting to sell it for $900,000, police in the city of Ardabil told Mehr.
According to law enforcement authorities, the picture is part of a private collection and has been attributed to Picasso by experts from the provincial heritage organization.
The head of that entity, Yahya Taqizadeh, confirmed the seizure to the news agency and said that authorities are presently trying to determine if the picture is an original.
