Obama Budget 2014 Budget Laying Foundation for Gun Control

During his presentation testimony before a House appropriations subcommittee on the Department of Justice’s budget for the fiscal year 2015, Eric Holder explained how the Obama administration intends to more effectively enforce gun control on American citizens.

Through the increase in funds and personnel in several crucial areas, Holder is asking for the means to more effectively monitor gun purchases of ordinary citizens, as well as the ability to store them in a national database type registry. That is to say, if someone buys a shotgun in Nevada, the federal government would have a record of that purchase in a national database.

Preparing to Enact Defeated Gun Control Legislation?

Specifically, these budgetary increases would allow for a drastic increase in the capability of the NICS database, which is used to perform background checks on the buyer during certain types of gun purchases. This system is the same database that would have been used for the “Universal Background Check” legislation which was defeated in the Senate last year. Oddly enough, Eric Holder seems to still be making preparations for such a system. From the FY 2014 Budgetary proposal:

This program enhancement will double the capacity of the existing NICS system. These expansions are vital in ensuring that the NICS system can support a Universal Background Check requirement, which is expected to double gross NICS transactions. This expansion will allow the NICS IT system to handle twice to gross transaction load it currently does.
