Sam J Duckworth. (20-year English teacher): I am not endorsing Common Core per se. Still have reservations about Fed Dept of Ed prescribing specific content in public schools. In the past the feds and the state depts of ed tried to reach a consensus on common curriculum goals, and that seems to be the better approach to me. On the other hand, I’ve seen English teachers justify using A Christmas Carol to advance virtually any curriculum goal. These Common Core goals may force them to both broaden and deepen their teaching techniques.
I am definitely against the use of classic literature, or the misunderstanding of it, to advance political goals in devious ways. Ms. Dana R Casey has done precisely that in a score of internet venues. From the comments on her blog, it is obvious that few bothered to read Maupassant’s story or check the logic of her argument, which is based on the most juvenile of misunderstandings. Clearly my analysis of The Mother of Monsters was not clear to you or perhaps too subtle. You seem to confuse my point. My analysis was not of Maupassant’s story, if fact I believe he would be absolutely horrified at how it was used in this unit, nor do I believe that the message I presented was the message HE intended. It was the essay question the module used in connection with the story that misinterpreted the story and forced one to draw a rather perverse interpretation. Did you NOT understand that was my criticism. I would say that your reading of my analysis was rather juvenile and utterly reactionary.
