Jim Carrey Makes a Jab at Monsanto During Commencement Speech

Actor and comedian Jim Carrey’s recent surprise commencement speech at Maharishi University of Management is really resonating with a lot of people, according to social media tickers.

It was filled with humor, stories and Carrey’s imparted spiritual advice.

But not many people caught his jab at Monsanto:

To quote him:

I’m here to plant a seed today…a seed that will inspire you to go forward in your life with enthusiastic hearts and a clear sense of wholeness. The question is, will that seed have a chance to take root…or will I be sued by Monsanto?

He is poking fun at the aggressive, overreaching nature of the biotech company that sues farmers for “patent infringements” – i.e., their patented product blew in the wind and landed in a non-contract field, actually contaminating that field. According to HuffingtonPost, Monsanto had filed 144 lawsuits against 410 farmers and 56 small farm businesses in at least 27 U.S. States, as of early last year.
A high-profile court case against Monsanto, for that very reason, made it all the way to the Supreme Court. All the 80+ farmers and groups involved essentially lost, when the Court refused to hear the case, thereby sealing previous decisions. Monsanto can sue with full immunity if one percent or more of a farmer’s crop contains their patented seeds. Could that have anything to do with former Monsanto attorney Clarence Thomas being on the bench?
It’s not really too shocking of the outspoken Carrey to have made such a remark to the graduates. The March Against Monsanto was taking place when he spoke, May 24th, and #EndMonsanto was a top-trending social media hashtag. Additionally, Maharishi University is known for their ayurvedic philosophies and organic health outlook. They are the first college to offer organic vegetarian meals to their students.

If Carrey’s speech doesn’t draw eyes on the acts of Monsanto and similar biotech companies, it is sure to draw eyes on a college that boasts natural health, environment and consciousness.

Here is longer version of excerpts – most of the ones online have omitted the Monsanto jab!
