A snapping turtle? I’m confused as this is a very well known species.
Just to be clear this is an alligator snapping turtle, not a normal snapping turtle. The alligator snapping turtles grow quite large as the one pictured is a younger turtle. The largest reported alligator snapping turtle was 403lbs and was found in Kansas. Here in Alabama it is not uncommon to see alligator snappers caught in the 100 to 200 pound range. Their meat is very good and they are hunted often enough that the state set harvest bag limits.

Or a turtle. Theres this thing called the internet, you used it to share your dumb picture. You can clearly see by looking at what you caught, that it is a turtle. You know where you live….Hopefully….So, you combine those two pieces of data, and type that into the internet.

This is an alligator snapping turtle. Being from South Louisiana I have eaten many of these. Normally they are 40-60 pounds but we have eaten one that was 125lbs. Generally, you factor in that 1/3 the body weight of a snapper is meat. Good eatin’
