Study: Smoking Weed *May* Change the Shape, Quality of Male Sperm
The medical journal Human Reproduction recently published a report stating that young men who smoke weed may be putting their sperm at risk. The study, which surveyed over 2,000 British men from 14 different fertility clinics, concluded that men who smoke marijuana had more erratically shaped sperm than those who didn’t.
Conducted by Dr. Alan Pacey at the University of Sheffield, the survey did not set out to prove cannabis causes sperm damage, but strove to examine “how habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol affected men’s sperm size and shape.” Before examining their subjects’ sperm shape (scientifically termed “sperm morphology”), each subject filled out a survey detailing their daily routines and personal habits (like smoking weed).
Thereafter, each subject’s sperm morphology was inspected.
All told, out of the 1,970 sperm samples, 1,652 came back in top form while 318 came back abnormal. And the 318 subjects with unusual sperm morphology purportedly either had a penchant for pot or a penchant for relieving themselves in the dog days of summer:
When cross analyzing the sperm samples with the men’s lifestyle habits and other factors, the researchers found only two strong correlations. The men with abnormal sperm samples were nearly twice as likely to have ejaculated during the summer months (from June to August), and they were much more likely to have abnormal sperm if they had smoked cannabis in the three months prior to ejaculating. The study did not, however, offer any explanation as to why exactly this might occur. So as with any respondent-based study, these results should be interpreted lightly, and treated as more of myth then fact, at least for now.
