Your Boss Is Now In Control Of Your Reproduction Rights (Picture)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

At times, it can seem like the best way to get good treatment from the government is to be a corporation. Since corporations are people and have free speech thanks to the Citizens United decision, do they have any other rights normally afforded to human citizens?  Depending on what the Supreme Court decides in coming months, corporations may have the right to decide their employees’ birth control choices.

On November 26, the Supreme Court agreed to hear two cases concerning the part of the Affordable Care Act that requires for-profit employers to cover contraceptives in their health care plans.  The cases were brought by Hobby Lobby, a Christian-owned craft supply chain store, and Conestoga Wood Specialties, a furniture store owned by a Mennonite family.  The majority shareholders of these companies argue that they view certain kinds of contraception as akin to an abortion, which they find morally objectionable to their religious beliefs. The companies sued the government, saying the Affordable Care Act violates the Constitution: the Constitution’s Free Exercise Clause bans the government from interfering with a person’s right to freely practice his or her own religious beliefs.

If the Supreme Court rules in the corporations’ favor, it would be nearly unprecedented.  It would give bosses control over the healthcare decisions of their employees—an especially troubling thought when you notice that 94 percent of the CEOs of Fortune 100 companies are white (and 92 percent are men).

Hey MORON Go back and reread the SCOTUS decision!!! This applies ONLY to CLOSELY HELD Co’s. Since you apparently don’t know what that means, here is your enlightenment for the day. Closely held means there are only a few shareholders and the stock (the Company) is not Publicly traded. Privately held means there are no shareholders other than corporate officers. Public Co’s The ones you are referring to are not affected by this decision. You definitely live up to your Misspelled screen name

the screen name is not misspelled dear

Your title is incorrect. Nothing is stopping any woman from purchasing her own birth control, get over the government control entitlement mindset.

      • bozzchem

Using the term “incorrect” would indicate an error was made. The title is a lie.

What a crock-o-crap! Other than forcible rape, EVERY woman is in 100% control of her reproductive rights. For no cost, if she doesn’t want children, she can abstain from having sex (works 100% of the time), and she also is protected from STDs. If she chooses not to abstain, she can purchase any variety of [partially sucessfull] birth control medications and/or devices at her sole expense or with the help of her partner(s). Her choices are no one else’s business or responsibility (same for her other personal choices: make-up, clothes, food, car).

Bull$hi+! Birth control pills cost $9.00 a month a Walmart. Take care of your own damn self!

Either with higher insurance payments taxes or anything I should not have to pay one penny for the murders of baby’s(or abortion whatever you call it)I’m on hobby lobby’s side

if a person does not like the pay or benefits at any company he is free to seek employment else where. He was told the pay and benefits when he was offered a job.

      • LittleMissSunshine

        I completely agree.

Also, the entitlement mindset is really appalling. It’s not like people are being prevented from buying contraception; they just can’t force their employer to cover it.

Next thing you know, they’ll be claiming that free lattes are a human right. Just because your employer won’t pay for your caffeine boost in the morning, doesn’t mean you’re not free to go out and buy your own.
