Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet had convened to vote on the deal at Israeli military headquarters in Tel Aviv. The ceasefire will come into effect immediately However, Hamas says it’s likely to reject an Egyptian ceasefire proposal for the current Israel-Gaza conflict. The militant group said it had not officially received the text of the agreement, but believed it to be “an initiative of kneeling and submission.”
 

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri already rejected the proposal late Monday night on the grounds that “we are still under occupation and resistance is the right of our people.”

Yisrael Beiteinu chairman, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, voted against accepting the ceasefire proposal, as did Bayit Yehudi leader Naftali Bennett. Voting in favor of the offer were Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, Finance Minister Yair Lapid, Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and ministers Gilad Erdan and Yitzhak Aharonovich.

The ceasefire started at 9am Israel local time, in effect bringing Operation Protective Edge to an end after 8 days. However, Hamas has yet to agree to the truce.

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) strongly vetoed Egypt’s offer for a ceasefire Tuesday, speaking as the Security Cabinet was in the midst of meeting over the future of Operation Protective Edge against Hamas. 

“I am against a cease-fire,” Katz said. “Under the circumstances, we can do a lot better.”

Nationalist Knesset Members expressed outrage on Monday night over Egypt’s proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, which the Cabinet is to vote on early Tuesday morning.

Diplomatic officials said that the Egyptian proposal would return the situation on the ground to the state it was before Operation Protective Edge, but with a Hamas that is much weaker than before.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum said on Tuesday that “A ceasefire without reaching an agreement is rejected. In times of war, you don’t cease fire and then negotiate.”

On Monday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced a three-step plan, which starts with a 12-hour ceasefire that would take effect on Tuesday morning.
