SIG’s new website confirms subcompact, .45 ACP P320s on the way

SIG Sauer has rolled out a new website, SIG Evolution, to promote its trio of new flagship firearms, the MPX series, the 556xi series and the P320 series, SIG’s first ever striker-fired duty pistol. While the website highlights these three new line-ups features, the P320 section unveils a new sub-compact model and the company’s plans to roll out models chambered for .45 in the near future.

This is expected but welcome news as the P320 evolved from the SIG P250, a similar modular, but hammer-fired design. The P250 has been offered in three sizes, full-size, compact and sub-compact for years and has been chambered for 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, .45 ACP and .380 ACP.

Like the P250 the P320 uses a serialized, modular sub-frame that by legal standards, is the true firearm, and all the other parts can be swapped around. It’s possible to take a full-size pistol chambered in .45 ACP for home defense, field-strip it, then reassemble it with a different set of part to make a subcompact 9mm for concealed-carry.

And while the P250 has found limited success in a niche market, the P320 couldn’t be any more different. It’s shot to the top of the list of current-generation striker-fired service pistols, rubbing elbows with the Walther PPQ, FN-America FNS, and fellow newcomer, the Heckler & Koch VP9.

A subcompact P320 is practically overdue, even though the series has just been launched. There is a lot of demand for a P320 for concealed-carry, in commercial and law enforcement markets.

The P320 subcompact is dimensionally-similar to its predecessor, 6.7 inches long, 4.7 inches tall and weighing it at just a hair under 25 ounces with the magazine. It’s slightly longer and taller than a Glock 26 but also has a longer barrel and a higher capacity with 12-round magazines in 9mm and 10 rounds in .40 S&W and .357 SIG.

The subcompact can also use higher-capacity Carry magazines with grip extensions for 15+1 in 9mm and 13+1 in .40 and .357.

The .45 ACP models will be 10+1, 9+1 and 6+1 for the full size, compact and subcompact respectively.

SIG will be supporting this new pistol series with a full suite of accessories including different grip sizes (small, medium and large), extended, threaded barrels and options like trigger safeties and magazine disconnectors. These are not standard but can be use for personal or departmental preference.

Like many other SIG pistols the P320 is offered with 3-dot SIGLight night sights but they will be producing models with Contrast sights for people looking to get one of these guns at a lower price point. They’re already fairly competitive with stores retailing P320s with night sights for $550 to $600.

SIG has not listed conversion kits for the P320 yet, and even though they’re very likely in the works, it may be a while before demand for complete guns dies down enough for SIG to get around to selling X-Change kits. For now, if you want multiple sizes or calibers, you’ll have to get multiple guns.

For anyone on the market shopping for a double-stack subcompact, you ought to consider waiting for the P320 SC to hit the market. It could be your next everyday-carry piece.
