The National Guard was ordered to Ferguson early on Monday, hours after police used tear gas to clear protesters off the streets following a week of demonstrations against the fatal police shooting of a black Missouri teenager.
In a statement, Nixon said the National Guard would help ‘in restoring peace and order’ to the St. Louis suburb that has been filled almost nightly with angry, defiant crowds since 18-year-old Michael Brown was killed August 9.
‘These violent acts are a disservice to the family of Michael Brown and his memory and to the people of this community who yearn for justice to be served and to feel safe in their own homes,’ Nixon said.
The National Guard had been on standby in Ferguson on Sunday as the suburb erupted into yet another night of clashes between police and protesters angry at the shooting of an unarmed black teenager.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon ordered paramilitary units into the St Louis suburb on Saturday to help ‘in restoring peace and order’ to Ferguson, where protests continued over the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a white police officer.
Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets on Sunday night in response to gunfire, looting, vandalism and protesters who hurled Molotov cocktails.
‘These violent acts are a disservice to the family of Michael Brown and his memory and to the people of this community,’ Governor Nixon said in a statement.
The National Guard is a reserve military force, and its deployment marks a serious escalation of the crackdown on dissent in Ferguson, a mainly black suburb of St Louis. Read more
