Científicos argumentan que la “Peste Negra” se debió al ébola, no a la peste bubónica

Un nuevo libro titulado Biologyof Plagues: Evidence from Historical Populations, argumenta que la “Peste Negra” pudo no haber sido causada por la peste bubónica, como sugieren los libros de historia , sino, por un virus de tipo ébola.

Los autores, Christopher Duncan y Susan Scott de la Universidad de Liverpool, afirman que la peste bubónica no pudo haberse dispersado a través de Europa a la velocidad en la que la Peste Negra lo hizo.

Duncan dice, “Si observas la forma en que se propaga, viajaba a una velocidad de aproximadamente 30 millas (48 km) en entre dos y tres días. La peste bubónica se mueve a un ritmo aproximado de 100 yardas (91 metros) por año.”

Duncan y Scott también analizaron los síntomas descritos en los textos históricos. La autopsia reporta detalles de que los órganos internos de las víctimas se disolvieron junto a una apariencia de líquido negro. La licuación de los órganos internos es el distintivo del virus ébola, y causa un tremendo dolor a las víctimas.

La exudación de los ganglios linfáticos que tan notoriamente acompañaba la Peste Negra, pudo haber sido un síntoma de un virus de tipo ébola. En ambos casos, fiebres hemorrágicas vienen rápido y hacen que los vasos sanguíneos revienten por debajo de la piel. Esto es lo que genera las ronchas, o “bubones” como se les llamaba durante el tiempo de la Peste Negra.

Los autores también notaron que los esfuerzos por mantener en cuarentena la Peste Negra fueron exitosos. Algo que no habría sido posible si la enfermedad se hubiera transmitido por las ratas, como la historia sugiere, ya que las ratas no respetan las cuarentenas.

Pero no todos están convencidos. Ann Carmichael, una historiadora y experta en la Peste Negra dice, “Es problemático asimilar evidencia de cuatro siglos y sacar teorías definitivas,” dice, “Deberíamos basarnos en la observación de cada peste por separado.”
