The campaign for Scottish independence has launched a “blitzkreig” on union suppporters, according to the YouGov chief executive, Peter Kellner, as a poll put the yes campaign in the lead for the first time.

Analysing the survey, which put yes at 51%, to 49% for no, Kellner wrote: “Seldom has the term ‘knife-edge’ carried such lethal force. A two-point gap is too small for us to call the outcome.” The speed and size of the collapse in the no campaign’s lead is astonishing, Kellner said. “The fact that the contest is too close to call is itself remarkable, as Better Together seemed to have victory in the bag. Month after month, they held a steady lead, averaging no 58%, yes 42%. In the past four weeks, support for the union has drained away at an astonishing rate.”
 
   

Sporadic shelling in eastern Ukraine threatens ceasefire as both sides trade blame ~ link ~

Firefighting has been reported near Donetsk airport while shelling is being heard in the city of Mariupol. The city authorities blame rebels for the violence, who say Kiev troops have launched artillery strikes against their positions.

Sporadic shooting and artillery fire have been reported near and in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Mariupol despite the ceasefire, with both local self-defense forces and Ukrainian military troops accusing each other of breaching the truce.

Clashes broke out Sunday outside the main rebel-held city in eastern Ukraine, throwing the freshly forged cease-fire agreement between government troops and Russian-backed separatists into further doubt.

At least two houses blazed in the rural village of Spartak, which lies just north of Donetsk and adjacent to the airport, after they were hit by fire. A man whose house was struck by a shell said rebels had fired from a spot nearby, which appeared to have provoked a retaliatory attack from Ukrainian government troops. This pattern has been regularly observed in the nearly five-month-long military confrontation.

A woman was killed and three people were hurt in shelling of the Skhidny district of Mariupol, the city council said today on its website. Ukrainian troops also fired at rebel positions overnight, killing one militant in the village of Makiyivka and several more in the town of Zuyevka, the self-declared People’s Republic of Donetsk said today. While Donetsk’s city council reported continued explosions, there’s no talk of ending the truce, according to the National Security Council. 

The deaths are the first since the warring factions agreed to a cease-fire two days ago in the wake of a counteroffensive unleashed last month by the insurgents. Presidents Petro Poroshenko and Vladimir Putin spoke yesterday by phone on the progress of the truce, agreeing that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe should monitor the pact, according to the Ukrainian leader’s website.

Details of the peace plan agreed during talks in Minsk, Belarus, between Kiev and the restive eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk were also made public, by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), who took part in the talks.

Kiev and separatist rebels signed up to a 12-point plan that includes a ceasefire, exchange of all prisoners, and “decentralisation” of power for the eastern regions. It appears to suggest that Donetsk and Luhansk will remain inside Ukraine, although representatives of the separatist governments claim they are still seeking full independence from Kiev. Analysts have speculated that Russia may be interested in setting up a statelet in east Ukraine that is technically ruled by Kiev but has so much autonomy it can essentially be ruled as a Russian protectorate.

A woman died and at least four people were wounded when fighting flared again in eastern Ukraine overnight into Sunday, jeopardising a ceasefire struck less than two days earlier between Ukrainian government forces and pro-Russian separatists.

The accord, brokered by envoys from Ukraine, the separatist leadership, Russia and Europe’s OSCE security watchdog, is part of a peace plan intended to end a five-month conflict that has killed nearly 3,000 people and caused the sharpest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.

Hospitals across the Midwest are being inundated with children infected by a bizarre virus, which first comes on as a common cold before developing into severe respiratory distress.

In Kansas City, Missouri, about 450 children were recently treated at one facility – Children’s Mercy Hospital – with at least 60 of them admitted to intensive care.
