25 Latin American Countries Sign Declaration to Eliminate Child Labor
The labor ministers and representatives of 25 Latin American and Caribbean countries on Tuesday in this capital signed a declaration launching an initiative to rid the region of child labor, officials said.
The declaration was signed within the framework of the 18th Regional Meeting of the International Labor Organization and seeks to prevent and eradicate child labor via intergovernmental cooperation throughout the region.
“We want to remove children from child labor and the protection of the rights of teenagers who are working, as pillars of a regional proposal that … seeks to move forward in the fight against this scourge,” said Peruvian Labor Minister Fredy Otarola.
The minister, who is presiding at the regional ILO meeting, said that the initiative seeks to accelerate the prevention and eradication of child labor through institutional cooperation and among different sectors of government.
Signing the declaration were representatives of Argentina, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Surinam, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The 18th Regional ILO Meeting has been under way in Lima since last Thursday with an eye toward evaluating the advances and changes in the labor situation in the Americas since the last regional conference, which was held in 2010 in Santiago, Chile.
Some 400 delegates and participants from 70 nations are participating in the meeting.
