ANGRY CROWD CHARGES HONG KONG PROTEST BARRICADES 
A mob of masked men opposed to Hong Kong’s pro-democracy demonstrators led a coordinated assault on the protest zone in the heart of the city’s financial district, tearing down barricades and clashing with police.
The chaotic scenes came after police carried out a dawn operation to reopen some key roads blocked by protesters for more than 15 days. Police said they will continue to chip away at the occupied zone to relieve traffic, and warned that anyone who challenges them could be arrested.

Taliban mountain ambush kills 14 Afghan troops
A mountain ambush by Taliban fighters killed at least 14 Afghan security force troops. Afghan villagers allege a NATO millitant airstrike actually killed civilians.
New Afghan President Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai has serious challenges ahead. Former President Karzai clashed with NATO over civilian casualties from airstrikes, straining relations as public anger against the coalition grew.
Militants opened fire on an Afghan Army unit heading back to the capital after several months being deployed there, killing 12 soldiers and two police officers, said Kazim Kenhan, a spokesman for the provincial police chief.

Russian media report troop withdrawal ordered
Russian media report that President Vladimir Putin has ordered thousands of troops massed near the Ukrainian border to return to their bases.

Russia has previously announced troop withdrawals that NATO and the US say were never carried out.

St. Louis protests condemn police shootings of teens
Thousands of people have been taking to the streets of St. Louis all weekend to condemn what they call excessive use of force by police.

They are demanding justice for the August killing of black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer in the nearby suburb, Ferguson.

BANKS HARVEST CALLERS’ VOICEPRINTS TO FIGHT FRAUD 
Two major U.S. banks, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co., use voice screening, also known as voice biometric blacklists, according to three people familiar with the arrangements, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because the system was meant to remain secret.
Altogether seven major American financial institutions are already using such blacklists or have run pilots, said Shirley Inscoe, an analyst with the Aite Group, a research and advisory firm.
