Calle 13 Gives Free Concert in Peru after Promoters Cancel Their Appearance

Hip-hop duo Calle 13 used social media to put together a free concert in the Peruvian capital after a scheduled show was cancelled by the promoters.

More than 1,000 people crowded Lima’s Plaza San Martin to hear the pair belt out a half-dozen of their hits from an improvised stage atop a bus.

Calle 13 was one of several acts on the bill for the Colors Night Lights festival, which the promoters cancelled late Thursday.

“Lima, if someone communicates with us here and lends us amplifiers for guitar and bass we will play tonight for free,” Calle 13’s Rene “Residente” Perez wrote on Twitter following news of the cancellation.

The arrangements came together in a matter of hours and the free concert kicked off around 1:00 a.m. Friday.

Lacking a permit, the duo offered an abbreviated version of their usual performance, but nobody complained.

“Thank you, Peru … Thank you for the musical instruments, thanks for coming and thanks for singing along with us,” Residente wrote afterwards on Twitter.
