Is The Nagano Quake An Indication That A Nearby Volcano Is About To Come To Life? (Video)

(N.Morgan) The earthquake activity world wide has been a focus of concern and research. Mount Myōkō is proving to be a very active volcano in Honshu, Japan. It is situated at the southwest of Myōkō city, Niigata Prefecture, and a part of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. Mount Myōkō is listed as one of 100 Famous Japanese Mountains, and together with Mount Yahiko, it is well known as the “famous mountain” of Niigata Prefecture. The most recent eruptions about 4,300 years ago produced pyoclastic flows down the eastern flanks. Present activity is solfataric from fumaroles near the lava dome, where sulfur was once mined.

Aftershocks continue to hit Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, on Sunday, one day after a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the area. The Meteorological Agency says the earthquake hit the prefecture after 10 PM.

Agency officials say the estimated focus was 5 kilometers below northern Nagano Prefecture. The tremor had an intensity of 6-minus on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in the villages of Otari and Ogawa.

30 houses collapsed in Hakuba Village and 4 were destroyed in Otari.

25 houses were severely or partially damaged in Otari and some cities.

40 people were injured in Hakuba Village, Nagano City and other parts of the prefecture. Seven are reportedly in serious condition.

The epicenter of the recent 6.7 Nagano earthquake and the various aftershocks is located between two volcanoes: one active (Myōkō) and one dormant (Tate-yama).
