Costa Rica Hosts CELAC Summit, Groundbreaking Change To Come..

Per Telesur, the 94 points may be summed up into five major themes.

1. The commitment to end hunger
2. A call to end U.S. interference in Latin American affairs
3. A call for the end of the U.S. blockade on Cuba
4. A call for Puerto Rican independence
5. The raising of a monument to victims of the slave trade

These points of agreement were negotiated over a six-month period between representatives of the 33 member states and were finalized by the presidents at the summit in Costa Rica.
Per AVN, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro tweeted about his excitement and enthusiasm regarding the agreed upon goals for the future of Latin America and the Caribbean.

“The path of union of our America has been consolidated, now it’s up to us to realize the agreed plan. I will explain everything in detail tomorrow.”

He also tweeted upon his arrival to his native country.

“Landing in our country, after living intensely CELAC successful summit and receiving solidarity and affection from Costa Rica.”

Furthermore, the Second Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Social Development to Eradicate Hunger and Poverty will meet in Venezuela in the second half of this year.
Poverty is a rampant issue that has widely plagued Latin American countries and continues to do so in the present day. Costa Rica, the host country of the international summit, has experienced an increased poverty rate, rising to its the highest in four years, 21.2 percent.
Regarding the grim economic situation of Latin American countries and its consistently high levels of poverty, Alicia Bárcena, the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean, commented that recovery from the international financial crisis was not sufficiently taken advantage of, which has kept many countries vulnerable to the economic cycles.

“The recovery from the international financial crisis does not seem to have been taken advantage of sufficiently to strengthen social protection policies that reduce vulnerability in the face of economic cycles. Now, in a scenario of a possible reduction in available fiscal resources, more efforts are needed to fortify these policies, establishing solid foundations with the aim of fulfilling the commitments of the post-2015 development agenda.”

Nevertheless, there is a strong sense of hope in the air for Latin American and Caribbean countries, due to the Political Declaration of Belén, which very well may result in the mitigation of poverty within that region.
