‘Mummy’s Boy’ Arrested For Plotting to Blow Up The Capitol

The FBI has arrested a man for allegedly planning an attack on lawmakers in Washington D.C. Described by the FBI as ‘inspired by ISIS’ Christopher Lee Cornell is accused of planning to set of pipe bombs in the building and then shooting officials in the mayhem that followed. He has been charged with attempting to kill a US public official.

Prior to his arrest, 20-year-old Cornell was allegedly taking the “final steps” in his plan – setting up travel arrangements to DC, buying two semi-automatic weapons and 600 rounds of ammunition. Court documents also stated that he made contact with an FBI informant, meeting twice in person last year. During these meetings, Cornell told the informant of his intention to attack the Capitol.

The same informant originally told the FBI about Cornell after noticing posts on Twitter expressing support for the Islamic State (also known as ISIS/ISIL). Cornell also allegedly posted similar thoughts on message boards:

“I believe that we should just wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks and everything,” Cornell allegedly wrote online, the FBI said. “I believe we should meet up and make our own group in alliance with the Islamic State here and plan operations ourselves.”

The BBC spoke with Cornell’s father who portrayed him as a mummy’s boy who would be incapable of carrying out such an attack.

John Cornell said his son became “lost and vulnerable” at high school and that there was no way his son “could have carried out any kind of terrorist plot”.

“He never talked about any kind of violence to me or to his mother. He is a mummy’s boy, he tells mummy everything.”

His Twitter account, which uses the alias Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, was used to communicate with the informant. Documents show that Cornell admitted he was not sanctioned by ISIS to carry out attacks.

“I believe we should meet up and make our own group in alliance with the Islamic State here and plan operations ourselves,”

He was arrested by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force after buying two M-15 semi-automatic rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition in Ohio.
