‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle text about his murderer: ‘This dude is … nuts’ (VIDEO)
Attorneys made opening arguments Wednesday morning in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh, the former Marine who admitted to killing fellow veterans Chad Littlefield and Chris Kyle, the sniper depicted in Clint Eastwood’s blockbuster film “American Sniper.”
Routh’s defense lawyer, Tim Moore delivered an ominous revelation about what Kyle texted Littlefield during their drive to the Rough Creek Lodge on Feb. 2, 2013, the day Routh admitted he shot and killed the two men.
“Chris Kyle was sitting in the driver’s seat on his telephone and he texted Chad Littlefield, sitting right next to him, he texted him, ‘This dude is straight up nuts,’” Moore told jurors.
Moore was laying out Routh’s defense and will reportedly seek an insanity plea for his client. The prosecution claimed Routh knew what he was doing, Fox 4 News reported.
“When he took their lives, he was in the grip of a psychosis, a psychosis so severe that he did not know what he was doing was wrong,” Moore said, laying out the basis for the insanity argument. “In fact, not only didn’t he know that what he was doing was wrong, he thought at that time it was either him or them — that he had to take their lives because in his psychosis … He was going to take their souls. Before they took his soul.”
The day Routh shot and killed Kyle and Littlefield, he reportedly drove to his sister’s residence in Kyle’s truck and admitted to the murders, claiming he feared the two men were out to do him harm.
Routh isn’t facing the death penalty if found guilty, but he could get life imprisonment, Fox reported.
