NEW YORK (INTELLIHUB) — Police officer Peter Liang, 27, was charged with manslaughter after ‘accidentally’ shooting Akai Gurley, 28, who was unarmed in a dark stairwell.
Gurley was shot and killed on Nov. 20 by officer Liang, an 18 month rookie, on his way to get his hair braided in an east-side housing project typically full of criminal activity.
“The stairwell was completely dark and Liang had his gun drawn as they descended onto an eighth-floor landing, prosecutors said. Meanwhile, Gurley opened the door into the seventh-floor landing after giving up his wait for an elevator. Liang, gun in his left hand and a flashlight in his right, fired a shot, prosecutors said. The bullet ricocheted and struck Gurley in the chest, who made it down two flights of stairs before collapsing.”, reported the AP.
Gurley was struck in the heat and liver.
It’s been a question amongst some, including the prosecutor, why officer Liang’s finger was even on the trigger at the time of the shooting, against police protocol as Liang obviously ignored his training.
Even more shockingly is the fact that Liang and his partner actually had a conversation after Laing’s gun discharged, striking the victim, whether or not to report what really happened as Liang feared he would be fired.
Liang’s indictment will mark the first of a police officer in New York since 2012 “when Richard Haste was charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of Ramarley Graham”, according to the AP.
Protesters outside the courthouse never bought Liang’s story. One protester said, “This is somebody who had his gun out, draw, in the staircase. Who shot a man and while he stumbled from the seventh to the fifth floor called his union rep. and they trained him on what to say and what to do.”
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a press conference, “The only thing we know for sure is there was a human tragedy involving Mr. Gurley [...] He’s gone. I spent time with his domestic partner and his child. They’ve lost a loved one. That’s a fact. That’s a tragedy. But everything else has to be determined through a judicial process.”
Gurley’s mother and stepfather live in Jacksonville.

Something stinks here. Cops, no matter the manner of the situation usually always gets excuses made when they shoot an unarmed person, which in this case really is no different than any other police shooting. This cop must have either seen something he shouldn’t have, or he didn’t beat enough citizens to satisfy his corporate masters. Just my opinion.
