CANADA : Call your grocery stores and representatives to say NO to GMO apples! Passed in the US, now targeting Canadian apples!
Some of you wondered, “Where in the world are GM crops and foods?”
We did too!
Now, the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) brings you the answer, in this first report of the GMO Inquiry 2015. Click here to read the full report or the summary pamphlet.
The question is simple, but the answer is not easy to uncover.
The Challenge: Without mandatory labelling, finding out what foods on the shelves are genetically modified or “GM” (also called genetically engineered or “GE”) is a mammoth task. Also, did you know the federal government doesn’t track all GM crops in the fields?
The Research: To answer this first question of the GMO Inquiry, CBAN dug into limited data from Statistics Canada, along with US government reports and information from industry and international organizations. Combining this information with our knowledge of Canada’s regulation and market analysis we are able to provide you with a comprehensive answer.
The Findings: Canada only grows 4 GM crops – corn, canola, soy and white sugar beet. Around the world, 4 GM crops – corn, canola, soy and cotton – are 99% of all GM; and two GM traits – herbicide tolerance and/or insect resistance – are in almost 100% of all GM crops. But this could change if a GM apple and GM salmon are approved, or if GM alfalfa is introduced in Canada.
Now that we know where GM crops and foods are, we can find out what they mean to people and the planet. Join us in our ongoing investigation.

The GM apple has been approved in the US, but not yet in Canada.
On February 13, 2015 the US Department of Agriculture approved the GM “non-browning” apple. But it is not yet approved in Canada. If it is approved it won’t be clearly labeled and it won’t be tracked. Write to your grocery store today. For this and more actions check www.cban.ca/apple
