Bullet ricochets from armadillo and strikes shooter’s mother-in-law (VIDEO)
wistv.com - Columbia, South Carolina
A woman was shot in the back by her son-in-law while she sat in the recliner at her Lee County, Georgia, home, but the man isn’t being charged with a crime because apparently it was a freak accident which occurred when the man shot an armadillo some 100 yards away.
“Just the circumstances, just all the way around, the whole situation was unusual,” said Investigator Bill Smith with the Lee county Sheriff’s Office.
Larry McElroy shot the hard-shelled varmint with a 9mm. The armadillo was killed, but the bullet apparently ricocheted off the animal’s shell, hit a fence, then traveled through the back door of McElroy’s mother-in-law’s mobile home and through the recliner where she was sitting.
74-year-old Carol Johnson was not severely injured and was said to be walking around and talking when authorities arrived.
Dougherty County Extension Coordinator James Morgan said for residents living outside of the city, they do recommend shooting armadillos to get rid of them. However, Morgan added that a shotgun is the preferred firearm, for the very reason illustrated by this incident.
