Las proporciones de los continentes, las ubicaciones de territorios, las distancias entre uno y otro, además de superficies exageradas; son algunos de los errores que el portal BuzzFeed señaló en un vídeo realizado hace unos meses.

¿África es casi del tamaño de Groenlandia?

Uno de los primeros errores en el mapamundi que conocemos es la proporción de tamaño que tienen África y Groenlandia, las que aparecen de un tamaño casi igual, aunque el continente sea 14 veces mayor en superficie que el territorio del norte (30.221.532 kilómetro cuadrados contra 2.166.086).

Otro ejemplo que se puede apreciar es el del Reino Unido y Madagascar, el primero tiene 243,610 kilómetros, mientras que el segundo cuenta con 587.031, los que en el Atlas aparecen exactamente del mismo tamaño.

Recife más cerca de África que de Perú

Las distancias entre algunos territorios también cuentan con su porcentaje errado. El caso de Recife (ciudad brasilera), se encuentra más cerca de África que del mismo Perú, país vecino. Al igual que la Habana que está ubicado más al norte que Honolulú (capital de Hawaii, isla estadounidense); o que la distancia entre la capital de Argelia, Argel, y Londres es más corta que la distancia entre Argel y el sur de Argelia.

Todo esto data desde el Atlas creado por el cartógrafo Gerardus Mercator en el siglo XVI, realizado para la navegación. Desde eso se han hecho modificaciones en el mapamundi, pero que siguen dejando marcas erradas para los que revisan su cartografía y proporciones de los territorios
