Es el equipo más pequeño del mundo y, 150 de ellos podrían caber en un dedal. Llamado Michigan Micro Mote (M^3), es un sistema informático completo de menos de 5 mm, contiene células solares que alimentan la batería con la luz ambiente y puede equiparse con cámaras, sensores de temperatura y presión.

Puede que no sea un portento en potencia de proceso, pero sus creadores creen que el microcomputador encontrará cobijo en el mundo médico, también en la industria del petróleo. Hablando de médicos, aprovechando el minúsculo tamaño de M^3, se contempla la posibilidad de “inyectar” el dispositivo en el cuerpo, a nivel de la piel, con la intención de leer los parámetros antes citados, y sin la necesidad de llevar un gadget encima.

¿Cómo podría interesar a las petroleras algo así? Pues dicen que sería de utilizar tener dispositivos que puedan bajar a los pozos de petróleo para ayudar a detectar bolsas de petróleo con su capacidad de proceso. No dan demasiada información sobre el proceso, pero ahí está el interés.

Una tercera aplicación práctica que describen sus creadores es la de gadgets para no perder objetos. Anclar un M^3 a unas llaves, una maleta, o cualquier otra cosa que consideremos de valor, y luego usar un sistema central para conocer su localización. El hardware final a añadir sería tan pequeño que no molestaría en el diseño final del producto a localizar.

Sin espacio para un teclado, ratón o la pantalla, la facultad y los estudiantes tuvieron que inventar una forma diferente de comunicarse con el Micro Mote. El M ^ 3 se programa y se carga a través de la luz. Por efecto estroboscópico de la luz a una frecuencia alta, el operador es capaz de enviar información a la computadora. Una vez que el Micro Mote procesa los datos, es capaz de enviar la información a un ordenador central a través de las frecuencias de radio convencionales.

El M ^ 3 está listo para la producción ahora, y el personal docente y administrativo ya están trabajando para la creación de computadoras más pequeñas, que ellos llaman polvo inteligente.
