(INTELLIHUB) — In what is sure to ignite already flaming emotions over race in America, a white police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina has been arrested after video surfaced showing him shooting an unarmed suspect as he ran away.

50-year-old Walter L. Scott was pulled over Saturday morning for a broken brake light by officer Michael T. Slager, who initially claimed that he feared for his life when Walter took his stun gun in an altercation that took place after the stop. Despite statements by the police department and the officers attorney, the newly surfaced video paints a vastly different picture.

The graphic video starts towards the end of what looks to be a scuffle between the two and shows Scott push away from Slager then turn and run as the officers stun gun is deployed. Slager then proceeds to fire eight shots into the man, with four hitting him in the back and one striking near the ear.

Afterwards, the officer is heard yelling at the man to put his hands behind his back shortly before another officer arrives on the scene. Although tough to conclusively tell, the video also seems to show Slager planting something near the body of Scott.

Scott is then left face down and handcuffed for several minutes until paramedics arrive.

Initial statements by both the police department and the officers attorney told a different version of events than those shown on the video. On Saturday the police department issued a statement that was then published in the locally run Post and Courier:

A statement released by North Charleston police spokesman Spencer Pryor said a man ran on foot from the traffic stop and an officer deployed his department-issued Taser in an attempt to stop him.

That did not work, police said, and an altercation ensued as the men struggled over the device. Police allege that during the struggle the man gained control of the Taser and attempted to use it against the officer.

The officer then resorted to his service weapon and shot him, police alleged.

Monday afternoon came another statement, again published by the Post and Courier and this time from the officers attorney, which contained even more fabrications:

A North Charleston police officer felt threatened last weekend when the driver he had stopped for a broken brake light tried to overpower him and take his Taser.

That’s why Patrolman 1st Class Michael Thomas Slager, a former Coast Guardsman, fatally shot the man, the officer’s attorney said Monday.

Slager thinks he properly followed all procedures and policies before resorting to deadly force, lawyer David Aylor said in a statement.

“This is a very tragic event for all of the families,” Aylor said. “I believe once the community hears all the facts of this shooting, they’ll have a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding this investigation.”

Evidence in the newly surfaced video clearly contradicts both statements, in turn destroying the credibility of the police department at a time when trust of police across the country is at an all-time low.

It also gives the public a tiny window into the propaganda fed to the corporate media by the police after a shooting, especially when you consider that the narrative given by police is startlingly similar to ones given by police departments across the country after any fatal shooting.

Scott, a Coast Guard veteran and father of four, was described by friends as a working father just trying to support his family. It is unknown why he originally fled his vehicle after the traffic stop. Sadly, the initial statements by the department and subsequent release of the video have put any information about the shooting provided by police into question.

“Walter was a nice, good, honest person.”
