SMART Technology: How it’s Gotcha in the Thieves’ Crosshairs

SMART technology may be so ‘smart’ that it can fool you into believing it is a helpmate whereas consumers are being taken for the fools we truly are by buying into technologies that will turn around and bite us in the pants.

Fox News recently produced an online article, “Hacking into your home: TVs, refrigerators could be portal to most sensitive info” that should scare the living daylights out of any person who values safety in his or her home.

According to Fox News,

Modern appliances are increasingly connected to the Internet, and each presents a potential path for savvy hackers to enter your home virtually and steal your identity, bank and credit card information and any other personal information they can use to line their pockets and leave you in the lurch, experts warn. The problem, they say, is that the technology that makes your house smarter – allowing communication between appliances, and even remote operation of everyday devices linked to home networks – has increased faster than the security measures needed to make it safe.

Televisions and refrigerators aren’t the only concern. Any appliance that connects to the Internet – cable box, thermostat, dishwasher, clothes dryer, coffee maker, smart water meter, toaster, oven, clock radio, garage door opener, security alarms, Insulin pumps, pacemakers, door locks, thermostat or lights – can be compromised. If they are linked to your home network, they can be a portal to your most sensitive information. [CJF emphasis added]

Dear readers, SMART METERS are the very means by which everything in your house is/will be connected to the Grid!

Also, they are the means by which information inside your house can/will be broadcast LIVE via radio waves to anyone who can hack into them! That is every petty hacker’s dream come true.

Whom do you have to blame for that breach of safety and security?

Answer: Your state legislative body, which apparently was lobbied hard enough by utilities to get smart meter legislation on the books in your state. Don’t they need to hear from you about how much you like that someone literally has inside access into your lifestyle, plus when you are home or not? There ought to be a law against that! Demand it! Figuratively, smart meters are comparable to leaving the front door key on top of the door mat, and mandated by state laws!

David Knight of Proofpoint says,

Many of these devices are poorly protected at best and consumers have virtually no way to detect or fix infections when they do occur.

Adam Levin of Credit.com and Identity Theft 911 “suggests a national conversation about how widespread such monitoring has become and safeguards that should be put into place to ensure privacy and security in the homes of all Americans.”

This writer suggests that smart meters be done away with since they are the prime means of surveillance, broadcast and connection with the Internet grid; are harmful to consumers’ health, personal safety, and place in jeopardy, personal identity and home theft, along with other risks and problems like smart meter hot sockets, fires and explosions.

Smart Meters, when it comes down to brass tacks, really ought to be banned. Furthermore, some smart legislator ought to introduce a smart bill that would make utility companies responsible for all thefts that occur within houses that have smart meters retrofitted. Now, that’s “smart!”
