A lightning strike on Tuesday night took out the power supply
to the Kai Iwi district north of Wanganui along with a transformer t
hat delivers power to pumps providing water to the city.

It was one of 89 lightning strikes recorded in the
Wanganui district in the 24 hours to 10am yesterday.
And while most of those strikes happened out to sea,
some occurred over land.

Non-stop thunderstorms rumble across Auckland

Non-stop thunderstorms are rumbling across the Waitakere Ranges and
other parts of Auckland as a band of active showers move across the region.

WeatherWatch meteorologist Philip Duncan said lightning and thunder
have been going nonstop since about 4:30pm.
“As of 5:20pm the western side of Auckland had a severe thunderstorm
while the eastern side had clear blue skies,” he said.

“I have got no idea how much rain we had in that bad burst
but it would have been significant.
There were ongoing lightning flashes and hail so we had it all.”

Ms White said there had been flash floods in the guttering on her property.

“All our guttering was just overflowing and it was just like a waterfall off the veranda.
We have lived up here for a while now and we get some heavy stuff

Dargaville medical centre struck in lightning storm

Dargaville Medical Centre in Northland had its phones and computers restored
early this morning after a lightning strike hit the building around 4pm yesterday.
No one was injured, but three windows blew out in the corridor connecting
the medical centre to Dargaville Hospital and everyone
had to be evacuated, practice manager Judy Harris says.

MetService uses the following criteria for
severe thunderstorms in New Zealand:

Heavy rain (from thunderstorms):
Rainfall of 25 millimetres per hour, or more.
Large hail:
Hailstones 20 millimetres in diameter, or larger.
Strong wind gusts (from thunderstorms):
Gusts of 110 kilometres per hour (60 knots) or stronger.
Damaging tornadoes:
Fujita F1
(wind speeds greater than 116 kilometres per hour (63 knots))
or stronger.

Note: some tornadic systems such as funnel clouds, waterspouts
and small land-based tornadoes are possible with thunderstorms
that may not be classified as severe.

Stormy night and day for Taranaki

Wild weather could now include small tornadoes hitting a rain soaked
and thunder beaten Taranaki, Metservice warns.

Flooding, thunder, and 700 lightning strikes

More than 700 lightning strikes were reported.

From the NZ Transport Agency, there were warnings about surface water
on the Hutt Rd, particularly near the Khandallah turn off.
Also:

We’re advising people not to use the left lane on SH1 northbound
after the Aotea on-ramp, as there is surface flooding……
