The UK Space Weather Preparedness Strategy has updated their report to include the possibility of severe space weather as a threat to world. The threats added included solar flares, solar energetic particles and coronal mass ejections (page 6). They warn of localized power outages, disruptions in satellites and GPS, increased radiation to aircrew, problems with transportation, and disturbances in small-part electronic systems (page 9).
The report further outlines that the worst case scenario would only allow Earth a 12 hour warning from impact. (Page 11).

HUGE MAGNETIC STORM!

Last March we wrote an Update (not a Post) concerning the “Biggest Magnetic Storm in Years” which was under way at the time. That one was rated by NOAA as a 7 of 9 possible. Last night (June 22) another major storm began striking the Earth from the Sun at a level measured by NOAA satellite as an Eight out of Nine! That is already up to levels that can interfere with short-wave communications and approaching levels which could begin to affect electrical grids adversely.
The largest magnetic storm on record occurred on September 1, 1859. The only highly electrical technology in use at that time was the telegraph. The telegraph keys kept clattering away with no one touching them (on either end) and some Western Union offices caught fire.
On March 13, 1989, a powerful magnetic storm triggered a massive blackout affecting the entire province of Quebec for nine hours. In more recent years, a satellite was put out of commission which disabled credit card purchases at gasoline stations across a wide swatch of the U.S. for about a day until another one could be moved over to that geosynchronous site.
These storms arrive from the Sun after an event called a CME – Coronal Mass Ejection. The light, X-rays and Gamma rays from the Sun reach earth in about eight minutes. Electrons show up in a few hours depending on the power of the blast. Protons are many times heavier than electrons and may take 2-3 days to reach Earth and they are the more physically damaging of the resultant emissions.
In the present case, the CME blasted off on June 18 and heavy particles arrived here last night, boosting the earth’s magnetic field disturbance to the eight level twice. While that was happening, further action from the Sun sent more ejaculate our way which is expected to arrive Wednesday night or Thursday (June 24-25). It is not so likely to be as strong, yet more beautiful auroras will be seen far to the south.
We have noticed over many years that the arrival of the Electron burst tends to coincide with positive stock markets and the later Proton arrival with more serious negative results. That may occur because of the opposite electrical charge on these particles. Maybe they make us feel better initially and worse later?!
We also noticed that the Solar burst on the eighteenth may have been triggered by the Earth’s position exactly opposite the Sun from the Galactic Center (27+ Capricorn) and that the June 22 blast was coincident with Mars exactly conjunct the G.C. while remaining in fairly close orb opposite the Earth. Jupiter was trine (120 degrees of arc) the Galactic Center forming a powerful 5-body configuration.

That’s an awfully intelligent and helpful entry for a BIN comment. Wow. Kinda restores my faith in humanity. But , indeed, thanks.. I found it a very good read.
I found it a good read as well…I would go to Lisa’s site and see her videos, but sge seems to think that she needs to read everything to her visitors, which I find to be VERY annoying, along with her voice. Hence, I don’t go…but just the headlines she and her side kick, Lyn, come up with causes me to click….however, neither has a voice I can stand for too long.
I so scairt!! I so scairt! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!! I’m going to move where we don’t have the sun!!! It’s our only hope!! And Charlie, quit making everyone so hungry with your donut talk!!
