Video: Americans Don’t Know Why They’re Celebrating the 4th of July

Editor’s Note: Wow. This is actually really, really sad.

It is no secret that Americans are uninformed. Even so, a people that waves its flag so fiercely should know the most basic facts about its country’s origins.

In a man-on-the-street video titled, “FAIL- Americans Don’t Know Why We Celebrate 4th of July!–A CONVERSATION WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC,” beach goers are asked about the upcoming 4th of July holiday. Mark Dice, who is best-known for his fervent focus on the Illuminati and aggressively criticizing Black Friday shoppers, had several simple questions. The answers are nothing short of jaw-dropping.

One woman says she does not know the names of any founding fathers. When Dice presses her, she guesses “Abraham Lincoln.” Another woman confidently claims that Independence Day celebrates “the day we overtook the South.”

Seeing how far he can push, Dice asks one person, “Back in the late 1700s when Jesse Ventura and John Wilkes Booth signed the Declaration of Independence…What year was that exactly?” After a pause, the woman offers, “Some time in the early 1700s, I’m not sure.”

No Americans in the video can name the country the colonies revolted against.

While obviously, videos like this are edited to reflect a certain narrative, it is alarming that Dice was able to find a consistent pattern of ignorance (naturally, the only person included in the video who could correctly answer any questions was a tourist on vacation from Italy). Americans are notorious for their inability to so much as name their vice president or find the countries their government bombs on a map. While it is alarming that these uninformed citizens fund the widespread crimes their government commits, what is equally disturbing is their attitude about it. Almost every single person who failed to correctly answer a question laughed about their inability to do so, seemingly amused by their own ignorance. They were happy to admit they would still be celebrating the holiday in spite of their inability to articulate the point of it.

Ironically, their modern government is uncannily similar (read: oppressive and violent) to the 18th century imperialists Americans cannot name but fervently celebrate their independence from. Rather, their ignorance enables that very corruption.
