Oshkosh just won one of the largest military contracts up for grabs, securing a $6.7 billion award to start replacing the hummer with the Oshkosh Light Combat Tactical All-Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV).
As part of the U.S. Army and Marines Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV) program, the Oshkosh ride went up against a strong list of competitors from around the world, including AM General and Lockheed-Martin, but came out on top.
The focus of the design is to have an in-between vehicle, larger and more durable than the now-vintage Humvee, but smaller than the behemoth MRAP designs used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Although it still weighs about three times as much as the Hummer it is set to replace, it makes up for it in additional electrical power, armor and speed– able to go about 70 percent faster off road– while running on a wider range of fuel options.
The first vehicles, some 16,901 of which were ordered to start, will start appearing in 2016.
In the end, depending on how many vehicles are ordered, the contract could be worth upwards of $30 billion.

You might want to recheck your article. These vehicles have already been sent out and even used in Afghanistan if I recall correctly. Heck, I even seen a video on youtube taken in Texas of a road lined with them in storage. This isn’t new information.
