New U.S. fears that China and Russia are modernizing their nuclear arsenals has sparked a major reboot of the Pentagon’s nuclear ambitions. According to Kris Osborne at Military.com, Washington will have to spend $18 billion a year, for 15 consecutive years starting in 2021 – to keep its nuclear weapons operational. That cheerful assessment was based on the testimony of U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work in front of the House Armed Services Committee yesterday.
When you see middle aged, bald white men rifling through flip charts and prostrating themselves in front of the House and Senate Armed Services Committee, know that they are groveling on behalf of war corporations like Raytheon, General Electric, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman and Boeing Systems.
So, $1 trillion will be spent as part of a 30-year plan to ‘upgrade’ the US nuclear arsenal of missiles, submarines and bombers. Is this progress, are are we really regressing?
