Saddle River cop to add age-discrimination claim in suit over lack of promotion
SADDLE RIVER — Police Lt. John Gaffney plans to add claims of age discrimination to his ongoing federal civil rights lawsuit against the borough.
Gaffney, 49, filed a lawsuit last year that claims he was improperly passed over for promotion to captain because of politics. This month, his attorney filed notice of a motion to amend his lawsuit, saying the Police Department also discriminated against Gaffney by promoting “a younger and junior officer.”
“As a result, his once promising career has been derailed, and has been the source of great emotional distress since he is forced to re-live on a daily basis this pain and humiliation by going to work each day at the department,” it reads.
The suit says Gaffney has worked on the force for 25 years and is paid $177,000.
Gaffney and his wife MaryHelen are seeking damages from the municipality, its Police Department, Borough Council and public safety committee, Mayor Sam Raia, Police Chief Timothy McWilliams, former Borough Administrator/CFO Charles Cuccia, Councilman Bruce Walenczyk, acting Mayor Al Kurpis and former council members Michael Mutter, Warren Boardman, Michael Toomey and Karen Mastriano. source
