Suspect shot, killed in Oakland after attacking officer with chain (VIDEO)
An unidentified man was fatally shot by an Oakland police officer after he viciously attacked the officer with a metal bicycle chain Thursday morning as the officer was beginning her morning shift.
The 18-year police veteran, whose identity has not been released, was talking with a woman who was assaulted by the same suspect shortly before the department’s shift change when the attack occurred.
The victim from the earlier assault was assaulted after she found the suspect trespassing in her apartment complex’s parking garage and asked him to leave. The woman’s injuries were said to be minor and the chain was not used in that assault.
The homeless suspect, who suffered from an unknown mental illness and was known to be violent in the past, fled from the scene and was not initially located. But after completing the interview with the victim, the officer returned to her patrol car only to see the suspect walk in front of the vehicle.
When the officer exited her cruiser to confront the suspect, he immediately attacked her, striking her repeatedly in the face and head with the bicycle chain. The officer then shot the suspect several times.
Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses, as well as the officer’s body cam footage, corroborated her account of the attack.
