A British journalist has sounded the alarm: ISIS plans to buy a nuclear weapon and smuggle it into the United States. No one knows their final target once they get the nuke across the border. But if past terrorist acts are any guide, it’s probably either Washington, D.C. or New York City.

ISIS Claims It Can Buy Nukes Within A Year

British journalist John Cantlie was abducted by ISIS in Syria in 2012. The other hostages taken with him have either been released, or beheaded. Now Cantlie is being forced to write ISIS propaganda. He’s also been the “star” of a series of ISIS videos in which he appears as the English-speaking host. But officials fear the worst once ISIS has no further use for him.

In an article entitled ‘The Perfect Storm’ posted in Dabiq, the ISIS online magazine, Cantlie reported that ISIS has billions of dollars in the bank. He says that’s more than enough money to buy a nuclear weapon.

Cantlie described how ISIS could buy a nuke through weapons dealers with links to corrupt officials in Pakistan. The nuke would be trucked to Libya, then shipped from West Africa to South America. From there the nuke would be smuggled through the porous borders of Central America and Mexico to the southern border of the U.S.

Cantlie writes: “From there it’s just a quick hop through a smuggling tunnel and hey presto, they’re mingling with another 12 million ‘illegal’ aliens in America with a nuclear bomb in the trunk of their car.”

“The Islamic State make no secret of the fact they have every intention of attacking America on its home soil and they’re not going to mince about with two mujāhidīn (jihadis) taking down a dozen casualties if it originates from the caliphate,” he wrote. “They’ll be looking to do something big, something that would make any past operation look like a squirrel shoot, and the more groups that pledge allegiance the more possible it becomes to pull off something truly epic.”

Cantlie closes the article with a chilling warning: “Perhaps such a scenario is far-fetched but it’s the sum of all fears for Western intelligence agencies and it’s infinitely more possible today than it was just one year ago.”

The threats of a nuclear attack by ISIS have been voiced before – by top U.S. officials.

Last year President Obama caused an uproar when he identified a nuclear attack as the number one national security threat to the United States. “I continue to be much more concerned when it comes to our security with the prospect of a nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan,” he said.

Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., said terrorists continue to target the Big Apple. “Perhaps the most likely threat is from a suitcase nuclear weapon in a rusty car on a dock in New York City.”

Even Russian officials think the threat is real.

Former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov has acknowledged that terrorists are trying to buy or build a nuke. “Of particular concern are efforts by international terrorists to get their hands on nuclear weapons. Most dangerous of all in this regard is the black market in nuclear materials, technology and expertise.”

But would someone in Pakistan really sell a nuke to ISIS?

Well, according to U.S. officials, Pakistan has already agreed to sell “off-the-shelf” nuclear weapons to Saudi Arabia. But there are reasons the deal may not go through, including a backlash from both China and the United States. So if Pakistan hesitates to sell a nuke to Saudi Arabia, it is very unlikely that it would sell a nuke to ISIS.

North Korea is a different story. It has a troubling history of selling high tech military weaponry like ballistic missiles to the highest bidder. North Korea has a small stockpile of nukes. And the country desperately needs money.
