David Petraeus: EE.UU. debería usar a miembros de Al-Qaeda para luchar contra ISIS

Los miembros de la rama de Al Qaeda en Siria tienen una sorprendente defensor en los pasillos del poder estadounidense: el General retirado y ex director de la CIA David Petraeus.

El general David Petraeus, antiguo jefe militar estadounidense y ex director de la CIA, estimó el martes que EEUU debería enrolar a ciertos combatientes del Frente al Nusra, la organización de Al Qaida en Siria, para luchar contra ISIS..

“En ninguna circustancia deberíamos tratar de utilizar o cooptar al Frente al Nusra” en la coalición contra ISIS, matizó Petraeus en declaraciones a la CNN.

“Pero algunos combatientes” de ese grupo “se han unido a él por oportunismo más que por ideología”, afirmó.

Podría ser posible recuperar a aquellos que “quieran renunciar al Frente al Nusra” y unirse a la “oposición moderada contra ISIS y el régimen de Assad”, según sus propios términos. No se sabe, sin embargo, si existe algún miembro del Frente al Nusra que tenga tal intención.

Su declaración a la CNN se produjo tras la publicación de un artículo suyo en el Daily Beast, en el que señaló que había recomendado a altos responsables estadounidenses recurrir a antiguos miembros del Frente al Nusra”.

El programa, dirigido a la formación y equipamiento de combatientes sirios “moderados”, que fue lanzado por la Administración de EEUU, no ha logrado despegar.

Hasta el momento, sólo 54 combatientes han sido formados. De ellos, una parte han muerto o han sido secuestrados a su retorno a Siria por el Frente al Nusra.

Nombrado director de la CIA en 2011, Petraeus, de 62 años, fue obligado a dimitir en 2012. La prensa reveló que había dado a conocer documentos confidenciales a su amante y biógrafa.

Las declaraciones de Petraeus muestran de nuevo la disposición de algunos dirigentes políticos y militares de EEUU a utilizar a miembros de Al Qaida para luchar contra el gobierno legítimo de Siria y otros y para defender sus intereses en general, algo que Washington ha hecho desde la década de 1980.

Por otra parte, grupos de reflexión política (thind thank) como la Brookings Institution ya han enumerado precisamente este plan. En una publicación reciente titulado “¿Debería Estados Unidos negociar con los terroristas?“, se afirma:

En última instancia, los programas de negociación y de amnistía con grupos extremistas deben ser considerados en la lucha contra el terrorismo…”

Brookings describe casi textualmente la propuesta presentada por Petraeus y Ford, lo que indica este plan está más profundamente arraigado mas que una cuestión de política según indica el Daily Beast.
