While picking through warehouses of curious goods in California, a Maine gun shop owner spotted what looked like an old military jet headed to the scrapyard and got curious.
That’s when Frank Spizuoco, owner of Maine Military Supply in Holden picked up a former Polish Air Force MiG-21 R (NATO “Fishbed-H”) reconnaissance fighter for its price as scrap metal and then tackled the job of moving the non-flyable 44-year-old Soviet-built plane across the country to his shop, where he plans to reassemble it for static display.
“It’s a way of preserving history,” Spizuoco told the Bangor Daily News, while helping his son, Zachary, put on a historic MiG 21 helmet that was worn by pilots. “It was heading to scrap. It would have been destroyed.”
