Concealed carrier quicker on the draw than armed robber
An attempted robber is recovering in the hospital after he pulled a gun Tuesday morning on a Toledo man who happened to be quicker on the draw.
The man, Terrance Reid, 21, was coming home from work around 4 a.m. when he noticed something strange. He said as he pulled into the driveway, a car drove by and slowed down. Reid, who purchased a gun and got his concealed handgun license after his family’s home was targeted for break-ins twice this year, put his handgun in his pocket before getting out of his car.
As Reid walked across the yard toward his house, an individual pointed a gun at him and told him not to move. At that point, fearing for his own safety, Reid shot the suspect a single time in the abdomen.
“I’m laying down on the couch and I hear a big boom!” Reid’s mother, a nurse who did not wish to be identified, told a local ABC affiliate following the incident.
“My son said, ‘Mom, I just shot somebody.’ I said, ‘Why?’ He was all shaken up. He said, ‘He just tried to rob me,” Reid’s mother recalled.
Reid called 911, but the suspect fled before police arrived. However, some time later, the suspect, who was later identified as Antonio Hadley, showed up at the emergency room of a local hospital. He is expected to survive.
“It was unfortunate what happened, but he had to protect himself,” said Johnny Jackson, Reid’s grandfather.
Lt. Joe Heffernan, with the Toledo Police Department, confirmed that Reid had a valid concealed carry permit and said, although the incident remains under investigation at this time, initials reports indicate it was a justified case of self-defense.
Reid’s neighbor, Tye Willis, who has also been the victim of a robbery and is in the process of getting a license to carry a concealed firearm, agrees that Reid acted in self-defense defense and supports his actions.
“I have a very good kid,” Reid’s mother concluded. “He doesn’t bother no one. He’s not in a gang. He’s not into none of that. He’s just trying to make an honest living.”
