Mike Rowe on comparing the ‘Modern Man’ to the ‘Man’s Man’

Modern man or man’s man? On guns at least, it seems like a clear choice

When the New York Times dropped a 27-point guide to the compassionate modern man, with dim views on guns, Mike Rowe came up with his contrasting list.

The story begins with Brian Lombardi’s piece in the Men’s Style/Self-Help section of the Times entitled “27 Ways to be a Modern Man,” complete with a clean-shaven and delicately coiffed male role model, shedding a single tear.

This included such tips as:

“The modern man buys only regular colas, like Coke or Dr Pepper. If you walk into his house looking for a Mountain Dew, he’ll show you the door,” and “The modern man doesn’t get hung up on his phone’s battery percentage. If it needs to run flat, so be it.”

On the subject of guns, the Times chimed in with, “The modern man has no use for a gun. He doesn’t own one, and he never will.”

Well, long story short, eternal first-time job apprentice Mike Rowe responded in kind with his own list, a 27-point rebuttal of sorts, of what he deemed to make up the “Man’s Man.”

On the cola comment, Mike says, “A Man’s Man doesn’t drink children’s beverages. He drinks tap water, wine, coffee, beer, whiskey, or iced tea. He does however, keep soda pop on hand, on the off chance a modern man stops by.”

Rebutting the phone charge comment, Rowe says, “A Man’s Man prefers his gas tank full, his weapon loaded, his pantry stocked, and his checkbook balanced. He also likes his phone sufficiently charged, and takes the necessary steps to accomplish that.”

And on guns, Mike drops the mike by saying, “A Man’s Man owns at least one firearm. He knows how to use it, clean it, and store it properly. He understands it’s importance, and sees it for what it is – a tool that can protect him and his family.”
