That does not mean I adore Putin. He is every bit the power player that his western counterparts are – only he is smarter and has a better PR department. He has no beautiful altruistic motive for his actions in Syria. His actions are strictly pragmatic. Let me explain.
Nobody would give a rats ass what happens in the middle east if the area was not awash in most of the world’s oil. It would get about as much attention as Africa does now. In Africa there are atrocities everywhere and nobody gives a rats ass. What’s the difference between the middle east and Africa? Where’s the oil?
What Putin particularly cares about is keeping Syria in the Russian camp. Why? Most of Russia’s exports are oil and gas. That’s where Russia gets its international trading currency. Saudi Arabia and Qatar want to build a pipeline from Saudi Arabia across Iraq and Syria into Turkey where it can interconnect with other pipelines into Europe. That would give Europe other sources of energy and more of a free market where Russia could no longer name its price. Syria has refused transit of the pipeline. That’s why the western powers have been trying to topple Assad. That’s why Putin must keep the Assad government alive and so keep the pipeline from traversing Syria.
Putin is not some sort of saviour. He is a good businessman, he is smart, and he has competent armed forces.
