GOP Establishment Wants to Bring Back Romney to Fight Trump and Carson

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Regardless of how you feel about Donald Trump and Ben Carson, you have to admit that their popularity is emblematic of a major sea change among conservative voters, just as Bernie Sanders represents a significant shift among liberal voters (full disclosure, I can’t stand any of them). In both cases, they reveal that the average American is absolutely tired of dealing with mainstream establishment politicians. They’re sick of being lied to by smooth talkers that don’t really have their best interest at heart, and don’t fulfill any of their promises.

As you might expect, the GOP establishment is not taking this race very well. It’s not going according to plan. Their main man Jeb Bush was supposed to have this one in the bag, and no matter what they do they can’t seem to get their voters to take interest in him.

You’d think that a light bulb would go off in their heads, and they’d realize that their voters are tired of getting screwed, and that maybe they should go ahead and start looking for candidates that at least resemble what their voters are looking for. However, that’s not in the nature of any establishment force. They are “immovable,” which is practically the definition of “establishment.”

So instead of changing their ways, they will do everything in their power to maintain the status quo. Not surprisingly, this desperate attitude often results in incredibly stupid ideas and decisions .

According to other Republicans, some in the party establishment are so desperate to change the dynamic that they are talking anew about drafting Romney — despite his insistence that he will not run again. Friends have mapped out a strategy for a late entry to pick up delegates and vie for the nomination in a convention fight, according to the Republicans who were briefed on the talks, though Romney has shown no indication of reviving his interest.

Yes, they would rather throw their lot behind a known failure, rather than accepting the fact that their old tricks don’t win elections anymore. They claim that they are worried somebody like Trump or Carson won’t be able to beat Hillary, so they think that turning to someone who couldn’t beat Obama is the answer to their problems.

This is typical establishment behavior. When they’re losing, they completely ignore the forces that are hurting them, because to do so would mean accepting the fact that they are no longer relevant, and no longer wanted. So instead, they just keep reinforcing their failures. Moreover, they think they know what the people want more than they do, so they ignore any sign of popular discontent.

Meanwhile, people like Trump and Carson are both still dominating the polls, with Trump taking a massive new lead according to Reuters.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – After a week in which he hosted Saturday Night Live and stood center-stage at a Republican debate, Donald Trump is surging among Republicans likely to cast votes in the party’s presidential primary.

According to the five-day rolling Reuters/Ipsos presidential poll, Trump has leapt some 17 percentage points among likely Republican voters since Nov. 6, when he was essentially tied with Ben Carson at about 25 percent. Trump now captures 42 percent of those voters while Carson has fallen off slightly.

Among all Republicans – not simply likely primary voters -Trump holds a substantial edge over Carson, at 34 percent to about 20 percent, according to the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

When you add up the poll numbers for Trump and Carson, it now amounts to well over half of Republican voters. In other words, more than half of all Republicans are rebelling against the GOP establishment, with only 4% saying they would vote for Jeb (I wonder how many of them even like Trump, or if they’re just desperate for somebody who wasn’t picked for them ahead of time). Perhaps now the GOP will take a hint, though I doubt it.

They are the establishment after all. They don’t learn from anything, they just keep floundering in the face of reality until it kills them. At some point, this new populist movement within the GOP is going to overrun the old guard, or simply render them impotent within their own party. Even if Trump and Carson lose, the writing is on the wall. The GOP establishment, (which largely consists of a bunch of neocons) is facing its final days.
