More than 100 women and girls have come forward with reports of sexual assault and robbery by gangs of men in the German city of Cologne on New Year’s Eve. Victims have described chaos outside the city’s main station, as the men carried out dozens of attacks with little apparent response from the authorities.

Correspondents say the identification of the attackers as North African or Arab in appearance has caused alarm in Germany because of the influx of more than a million migrants and refugees in the past year.

Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker has drawn ridicule online for proposing a “code of conduct” for women to prevent sexual assault, advising them to remain at “an arm’s length” from strangers.

The main charge being made against her online was that Reker was blaming the victims for their behaviour, rather than the attackers themselves. “I can’t believe the Mayor of Cologne’s response to mass sexual assault is to victim blame,” read one tweet, and “No, no, no, no. We do NOT blame the victims,” read another, both reflective of the general sentiment on the network.

Others flagged up what they saw as the sheer impracticality of Reker’s ideas. Christopher Lauer, a politician, wrote: “I wanted to mug this woman and molest her, but… she’s an arm’s length away!” Others offered an even darker twist, referring back to an incident in October when Mayor Reker was stabbed and seriously wounded whilst campaigning to become mayor: “Maybe it could have been avoided if she’d kept him at an arm’s length?“

Now, Germany is facing the same type of rape epidemic as progressive politicians continue to allow thousands of refugees, many of whom are military aged males, into the country.

During New Years Eve celebrations in the western city of Cologne, dozens of Muslim men allegedly participated in rape mobs. They surrounded young women, touched them, raped them and stole their wallets and cell phones. Tensions surrounding how the situation is being handled are rising by the day.

In what could be its worst start to a new year in a century, the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Thursday sunk by 392 points, or 2.3 percent, putting US stocks down by 5 percent. At one time, the Dow Jones slumped by 442.88 points. The NASDAQ Composite Index closed down at 4,689.43, losing more than 3 percent, on Thursday.
