McCain’s secret new constituency
It’s no secret Arizona’s conservative Republicans are not enamored with John McCain. After he was embarrassingly censured by elected state delegates at the 2014 GOP Statutory meeting, he retaliated by using his operatives and a megabucks San Francisco Obama donor to oust them from their elected positions.
Adding to his intra-party woes, the aged senator has been having a tough time ginning up a crowd as evidenced by his recent flop appearance featuring Mitt Romney in Mesa — which was miscalculated to be a crowd pleaser. And no, we’re not referring to this one.
Where Donald Trump and Ben Carson drew local crowds of thousands, McCain’s highly advertised Romney event pulled in a puny crowd estimated at under 300.
So today he’s opting for a new constituency. At 3:00 PM this afternoon, McCain is appearing at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in downtown Phoenix where he will hold a Town Hall meeting. His press release notes there will be media availability following the event.
No doubt RSVPs are flooding the email and phone lines are tied up.
It’s difficult not to summon up a degree of pity for the man who will be 80 by Election Day and is egotistically running for yet another six-year term. When you’re listed as Number Six on Roll Call’s roster of the 10 most vulnerable U.S. senators as McCain is, the Daily Caller reports that he and Jeff Flake are in a race for the nation‘s “least popular senator prize,” and the Senate Conservatives Fund dedicated a page titled, Replace John McCain to you, it‘s a good guess the constituencies you need are rapidly evaporating.
The previously overlooked Ukrainian American population might hold the key for Johnny Mac, but it’s doubtful. Their statewide population isn’t high enough to counter the others who wouldn’t vote for him if they were promised a free pony and freshly baled hay for a year.
