I never understood that. Obama’s original victory was a wonder of strategic candidacy. The Republicans knew that Bush/Cheney had destroyed their chances of re-election, so they ran John “Father Time” McCain and Sarah “Poor, Unlucky Polar Bears” Palin, against Obama/Biden. They know about the short America memory (indeed, they were counting on it), and knew that any further economic issues would be blamed on “President Darkie”. Dammit, if they weren’t dead on the money. By running candidates that they knew could never beat Obama, they ensured that they’d win this election.
