Take A Look At This Self-Filling Water Bottle That Turns Air Into Drinkable Water

The implications of this technology are huge, especially for regions of extreme poverty where people do not have easy access to clean drinking water.

It’s a self-filling water bottle that actually turns air into drinkable water by using the condensation of the humidity which is contained in the air.

It was designed by Kristof Retezar, a designer based in Vienna, whose intention was to provide more than one billion people around the world, in water-scarce areas, with clean drinking water.

It’s called Fontus, and it works by using the simple principle of condensation. Basically, when humid air flows into the contraption, it hits a series of hydrophobic ‘teeth’ which help turn the water vapor into actual water droplets. What’s even better is that it’s completely solar powered, and has a device attached to it that helps keep bugs and dust out. Unfortunately, at this time it cannot filter out potentially harmful contaminants.

Retezar told Live Science that “the water you get is clean, unless the air is really contaminated. We’re thinking about making a bottle that also has a carbon filter, and this one would be for cities or areas where you might think the air is contaminated. But originally, this water bottle was thought to be used in nature, and places where you wouldn’t have contaminated air.”

It can provide half a litre in just one hour when exposed to temperatures between 86 degrees and 104 degrees Fahrenheit, with approximately 80-90 percent humidity.

The device was a finalist for the Dyson award in 2014 and has been gaining attention ever since.

“You always have a certain percentage of humidity in the air, it doesn’t matter where you are – even in the desert. That means you would always potentially be able to extract that humidity from the air.”

I joined the CE team in 2010 shortly after finishing university and have been grateful for the fact that I have been able to do this ever since :) There are many things happening on the planet that don’t resonate with me, and I wanted to do what I could to play a role in creating change. It’s been great making changes in my own life and creating awareness and I look forward to more projects that move beyond awareness and into action and implementation. So stay tuned :) [email protected]

Distilled water may be great for filling a partially dry wet battery, but not for human consumption as it contains ZERO minerals and other components of good water.

        no, no and no.

distilled water is the only water fit to drink.

it has 0 ppm of ANYTHING, which is good, because the ‘minerals’ you speak of found in spring water for example, are inorganic minerals! your body can’t use these and they only serve to gum us up inside causing things like arthritis.

militaries use only distilled water, rich people drink only distilled water.

it is the exact same as rain, snow, mist, dew and fog…..PURE.

        YOU ARE INCORRECT.

Early Death Comes from Drinking Distilled Water
by Zoltan P. Rona, MD, MSc

During nearly 19 years of clinical practice I have had the opportunity to observe the health effects of drinking different types of water. Most of you would agree that drinking unfiltered tap water could be hazardous to your health because of things like parasites, chlorine, fluoride and dioxins.

Many health fanatics, however, are often surprised to hear me say that drinking distilled water on a regular, daily basis is potentially dangerous.

Paavo Airola wrote about the dangers of distilled water in the 1970′s when it first became a fad with the health food crowd.

Distillation is the process in which water is boiled, evaporated and the vapour condensed. Distilled water is free of dissolved minerals and, because of this, has the special property of being able to actively absorb toxic substances from the body and eliminate them. Studies validate the benefits of drinking distilled water when one is seeking to cleanse or detoxify the system for short periods of time (a few weeks at a time). Fasting using distilled water can be dangerous because of the rapid loss of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride) and trace minerals like magnesium, deficiencies of which can cause heart beat irregularities and high blood pressure. Cooking foods in distilled water pulls the minerals out of them and lowers their nutrient value.

Distilled water is an active absorber and when it comes into contact with air, it absorbs carbon dioxide, making it acidic. The more distilled water a person drinks, the higher the body acidity becomes. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Distilled water, being essentially mineral-free, is very aggressive, in that it tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact. Notably, carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive. Many metals are dissolved by distilled water.”

If all you ever consume is distilled water then maybe not a great idea, other than that it’s 100% better than corporate water.
As for the Fontus, theirs many nifty tricks to filter water, so yeah, great idea.

    • Morgawr

So throw in some sea salt and best of both worlds :)

Having lived in one desert or another for many decades of my life, I can easily say one thing – nothing, and I mean NOTHING that works on ‘catching humidity’ is going to keep a grown adult hydrated during the day; whether it is a solar still or a fancy bottle. If you doubt this (you preppers KNOW you want to challenge me on this), I advise you to put together a backpack you can travel 10-miles a day with, in unrelenting cloudless heat of 100-degrees or more, and include in that backpack your various ‘solar stills’, fancy bottles, etc., and show me how you can accumulate 1-gallon of water every 24-hours consistently with what you can pack, while living in a 10-percent relative humidity oven. CAN’T BE DONE. This is a $200 toy for the ‘comfortable prepper’. Then again, don’t take my word for it, buy it, throw it in your ‘bug out bag’ and forget testing it until you really need it. You know, like you probably did with every other piece of gear you bought for the purpose of ‘bugging out’. Guys, just pack good knives. That way, when the rest of us find your dried, emaciated corpses along the road, we can at least rat-pick the rest of your pack for the actual valuable goodies later.

    • Morgawr

Considering most of us will never visit a desert, these toys could be life savers in our neck of the woods, as long as you don’t rely on just the one option, I don’t see a down side.
