CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) – Chesterfield parents are outraged over Instagram video that shows a massive brawl at Salem Church Middle School. Parents claim at least two students were suspended after being bullied.

There is only one way to describe the scene at Salem Church Middle School. 

“Insane…out of control violence,” said security officer and private investigator Perry Hicks.

Parents say the violence could have been avoided. They claim a student letter and other messages that warned of bullying went ignored by school leaders. 

Hicks notes this is not the first time a Chesterfield student was suspended and even hit with possible charges for fight backing. After a brawl at Thomas Dale High School, Andrea Jackson says her son was told to turn the other cheek.

“The police officer and the dean of students suggested ‘fall on the ground, get in a fetal position, and cover your head until help comes,’” said Jackson.

Hicks was shocked.

“Unacceptable and irresponsible,” said Hicks. “The school administrator who wants to tell me that a child should get in a fetal position, I would like him to get in a fetal position and let me go to work on him. Maybe he’ll change his mind later.”

We got a copy of a parent letter to the principal appealing the suspension.

“Your administration has repeatedly been made aware of the ongoing verbal assaults, cyberbullying, and physical assaults,” said the parent. “It is clear that our students are not safe and that the proper supervision is not being provided in the school.”

The principal sent a short response.

“Thank you for your message regarding this past Friday’s actions. Last Friday I was not on campus; upon my return I will review this matter and research it to familiarize myself with the events of that day,” said Dr. Gregory Ecroyd. “Thank you for your time to state your request, questions and concerns.”

Hicks says parents should remember to file formal complaints if they have concerns about bullying.

“We have to take threats seriously,” said Hicks. “Action needs to be taken. If they don’t file written complaints…if it’s not written down it didn’t happen. That’s the way it is.”

The Chesterfield School System did not respond, but in the past they have released the following statement:

“We take very seriously our responsibility to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that is free from disruption. Students who violate student conduct regulations are subject to suspension and/or expulsion, and, if the offense is a violation of the law, to prosecution.”To protect students’ rights to privacy, the Congress of the United States has enacted the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law prohibits school divisions from releasing certain student information, including whether any disciplinary action has been taken, without the express written permission of parents or guardians.”Shawn Smith
