Who Americans Really Blame For Trump Rally Violence
Bob Unruh
The poll found that 59 percent of Democrats, 70 percent of independents and 77 percent of Republicans believe media deserve either “a lot” or “a little” of the blame.
Fifty-eight percent of the respondents consider the “left-wing media” liable and 53 percent blame the “right-wing media.”
Sixty-four percent blame Trump supporters, but 79 percent blame the protesters themselves.
The poll was conducted through Web-based interviews with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percent.
The Media Research Center reported last week after a mass organized protest prompted a cancellation of a Trump event in Chicago that “the left-wing protesters … escaped nearly all blame, as reporters dumped 94 percent of the blame on Trump and his campaign.”
MRC analysts Mike Ciandella, Scott Whitlock and Kyle Drennen looked at NBC, CBS and ABC reports on the Friday fracas and found reporters blamed Trump 46 times.
Newsbusters reported that on the “Today” show, for example, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell compared Trump to a 1960s segregationist: “Trump’s rhetoric now being compared to George Wallace, who split from the Democratic Party in 1968.”
The report said that while “a presidential candidate – especially a frontrunner – should obviously be held to the highest level of scrutiny, the media’s race to blame Trump skirted the role of the left-wing activists whose goal on Friday was not just to demonstrate their opposition to Trump, but to actually force the cancellation of his campaign event.”
A relatively neutral comment came from media critic Steven Brill, who said on CNN: “I want to say this very narrowly, because this does not excuse Mr. Trump from inciting violence, it does not excuse everything else he’s doing in his campaign. I do think that if Trump supporters, by the dozens or hundreds, planted themselves at a Hillary Clinton rally or a Bernie Sanders rally and stood up and disrupted it, and that was their intent, that the press would cover that differently. So in that sense, I think Trump has a point.”
The YouGov poll also found 49 percent believe it’s acceptable to protest candidates at their own events, and 59 percent say it’s permissible for politicians to eject protesters.
Sixty-seven percent perceive more violence at Trump events than other events, and 62 percent say it’s part of a broader pattern.
Regarding who’s responsible for the violence, 44 percent said protesters and 37 percent said Trump. Half of the respondents accused Trump of “encouraging” it.
One in six respondents said protesters at political rallies “deserve to get roughed up.” Nearly two-thirds did not agree.
The respondents came from YouGov’s opt-in Internet panel using sample matching.
