WOW: The TSA Paid $1.4 MILLION for an App That Randomly Showed an Arrow… Just an Arrow

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

As if the TSA could be any more of a big, fat, liberty-trampling joke on the American people…

Now, via Kevin Burke’s FOIA request, it has come to light that the Transportation Security Administration gave computer giant IBM hundreds of thousands of dollars in a program totaling over $1.4 MILLION to develop “software” that a pre-teen geek could’ve programmed in DOS back in the day before the Internet even existed.

The “TSA Randomizer App” just randomly shows agents an arrow.

That’s it. An arrow.

Sometimes the arrow points to the left. Sometimes the arrow points to the right.

The idea is the TSA agent taps the app on his or her provided iPad and it randomly directs passengers into a left lane or a right lane. Supposedly this would make them unconstitutionally treating everyone like guilty cattle at airports go faster or something, and it would make it harder for the terrorists (you know, the ones the TSA has never stopped at an airport ever) to figure out the TSA’s security screening patterns.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars went into the development of this random arrow software. The $1.4M is the total contract, and it likely included the price of thousands of iPads for the TSA agents to use to accomplish this genius feat of modern security as the program was deployed in over 100 airports across the country, but come on.

They basically spent $1.4 million for iPads and an app that randomly shows an arrow. Wow.

And oh, by the way, the program was discontinued after the random arrow told a convicted felon to go to the pre-check lane.

Talk about security theater. Do the agents get to keep their free iPads? Because we all know the American people won’t be getting a refund on that completely wasted $1.4 million.
